The Project Engineer is responsible for engineering and technical aspects of solar projects and is a key player in successful implementation of solar projects. This person will gain broad experience with every facet of photovoltaic solar energy generation facility design, equipment, construction, quality management and commissioning.

The Project Engineer is a member of the engineering team and is supported by the engineering leadership to complete their daily work on their assigned Project Team, managed by the Project Manager. They will interact daily with our internal team, consulting engineers, equipment OEMs, project owners, permit officials, subcontractors, and various vendors.

Project Engineers develop and manage practical solutions to challenges and have a business perspective so to effectively meet the project team goals and objectives.

Requirements
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Engineering Management
  • Review project layouts prepared by others and assessed opportunities for optimization of equipment layout.
  • Collaborate with the team to enhance project efficiency through equipment selection.
  • Manage RFIs, Submittals, and technical requests.
  • Work with local, state, and federal officials to ensure all construction permits are obtained and the project is in conformance with all applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate with other engineering team members to resolve any construction issues or design changes.
  • Confirm adherence to design specifications and industry standards.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings, review contractor RFIs, and manage the engineering team's responses to contractors.

Project Management
  • Assist with preparation of contract documents for contractors, ensuring clarity and completeness.
  • Review scope of work to confirm that all procurement and installation activities are coordinated between SolAmerica and contractors.
  • Coordinate Submittal reviews to ensure responsible stakeholders provide input and approve of equipment, material, and consumables provided by contractors.
  • Conduct periodic site visits to job sites to review electrical installation methods are performed in accordance with SolAmerica Quality Assurance Plan.
  • Monitor tests completed by contractors to ensure their means and methods meet the testing requirements.
  • Schedule and time management: Track progress and schedules, prepare initial schedules, provide forecasts of schedules with input from project team members.
  • Prepare reports (internal and external), contract administration, design management, equipment reviews and submittals, compliance with codes, contracts, and permits, Owner communications and management.
  • Provide support for, and work assigned, by the Project Manager.

Utility Interconnection Assistance
  • Coordinate with utility representatives for review of facility studies, cost estimates, and equipment locations.
  • Attending interconnection status meetings with utilities and providing timely responses to support the interconnection process.
  • Ensure compliance with utility requirements, attend site meetings with utility counterparts, and work with other engineering team members to address any issues that may arise during design or installation of interconnection facilities.

Quality Assurance and Improvement
  • Understand testing requirements from utilities, local/state AHJ, or owner (witness, performance, commissioning, energization, etc.) and work with the engineering team to review results from these tests.
  • Ensure compliance with Quality Assurance Plan requirements and verify that designs and contractors meet performance standards.
  • Nurture and continuously develop knowledge of our design specifications, installation practices, and Quality Assurance Plan by attending online learning seminars, attending conferences, and reading new equipment installation/operation manuals.
  • Contribute to a Lessons Learned database list to drive continuous improvement in electrical designs and construction processes.
EDUCATION & KNOWLEDGE

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

Undergraduate STEM degree (may consider demonstrable experience in relevant industries in lieu of STEM degree)

Ability to read and comprehend plans, drawings, specifications, bid materials, contracts and related construction documents. Additional training in these skills will be provided.

Ability to be self-motivated and work in a team environment where the focus is on the goals and objectives that determine the success of the projects.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail

Ability to exercise judgment to appropriately balance risks with business objectives

Intellectual curiosity and a desire to constantly learn and improve

Self-starter with a strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple competing priorities

Ability to work both independently and as part of a close-knit team

KEY SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Experience working with renewable energy companies and a deep understanding of the solar industry.

Experience with solar electrical equipment engineering and/or electrical engineering.

Experience with solar racking design and engineering process (geotechnical studies, pile load testing, etc.)

Engineering experience in the field is highly recommended.

Familiarity with utility interconnection processes and testing requirements.

Proficient with MS Project

EIT or PMP Certification
